Michigan forest transformed into an interactive sensory light show

Legend has it there are mysterious creatures living in a Michigan forest. It’s up to you, the explorer, to uncover the magical source of light coming from deep within the woods. That’s the fictional premise behind this interactive sensory forest light show.

Glenlore Trails is a half-mile outdoor path located at 3860 Newton Road in Commerce Township at Multi Lakes. This psychedelic display of colors in the middle of the woods is the work of Bluewater Technologies of Southfield. Scott Schoeneberger says this is the first time the company has ever created something like this, as it was looking for a way to create new business amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“Our company largely supports big corporate events across the country like auto shows and events for companies like Walmart and Anheuser-Busch,” Schoeneberger told MLive. “We had this idea of doing this type of themed entertainment for many years, but the equipment was always out on jobs. But when COVID shut everything down, the equipment was just sitting around, as half our business was shut down.

This excursion is a little eerie because of the atmosphere of being located in a forest, but it’s not scary.

“It’s very family-friendly. We’ve outfitted the trail with a lot of lighting and audio/visual elements,” said Schoeneberger. “There’s projections, LED displays and audio. There’s 10 areas to stop and check out. Each one is a little bit different, like the projection in the sky, the interactive LED wall that kind of tracks you as you walk in front of it and the creatures of Glenlore which play different musical notes as you step on them.”

Schoeneberger says his company planned and designed this interactive forest light show in just a few weeks and so far it has been a hit as many upcoming sessions are sold out.

“We thought there has to be something we can do with this equipment in a safe way. We called around to land developers and came across Multi Lakes, who loved our idea. They showed us all the different trails. We landed on one, cleaned it up and it became a great pivot for us to bring a lot of our staff back.”
